Giovanni Sornatale is photographer, printer, and artist based in Los Angeles, California. After discovering his love for photography in 2020, he began educating himself on the tools and creative techniques necessary to make images that stand out from the rest. This quest to create meaningful, tangible work led him to discovering the darkroom, a place that would soon become one of his biggest inspirations.

 

​After a series of analog printing courses at Santa Monica College, Giovanni became hooked on the depth and beauty his handmade prints could possess. With a good idea and a properly developed negative, the darkroom provided endless creative expression. Today, Giovanni channels this energy in the field as he visualizes images with the aspiration that they will soon be immortalized in silver gelatin prints and displayed for all to see.​

 

As seen in his most recent series, Puglia, Giovanni looks to deepen his roots in the southern Italian region as he showcases the beauty of the people, the land, and his family that reside there. Influences from street photography and journalism can be seen in these large scale prints of timeless and authentic moments.​

Giovanni's images have been recognized by American Photographic Artists - Los Angeles as he was selected in 2023 as a winner of the Off The Clock personal photography exhibition. He also received Best In Show for Fashion in the 2022 annual photography exhibition at the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center.

 

Commercially, Giovanni builds stories through portraiture and still life in his studio, as well as captures the beautiful details, spaces, and faces of a wide range of events.​
